In case you did not know it, there is an outstanding golf organization in Sarasota dedicated to improving the lives of physically impaired.
The Adaptive Golf Association is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides individuals with physical, cognitive or sensory impairments, the needed resources to learn, play and enjoy the great game of golf while enhancing their lives.
Adaptive Golf Sarasota holds weekly clinics on Thursdays at The Palms Golf Club at Forest Lakes, in Sarasota, FL.
During the winter months the clinics run from 2:30-4:30 p.m. (summer is 9:30-11:30 am). It hase been doing this for 26 years and is the longest running adaptive golf program in the country and the only program that runs clinics 52 weeks a year.
It provide golf lessons and best practices to adaptive needs persons including disabled veterans, injured military members, seniors, juniors, men and women of all generations, to get back out on the course and enjoy the company of other golfers. Impairments range from stroke, spine injury, limb loss, traumatic brain injury, PTSD, MS, MD, joint replacements, cerebral palsy, macular degeneration, Parkinson’s, spina bifida, low vision/blind, hearing loss, orthopedic, arthritis, diabetes and more.
It needs help to reach 57 million people in the U.S. with a disability (that’s 1 in every 5 persons) by offering them a rehabilitative outlet, through local Adaptive Golf Association clinics.
The feet, for those able to pay, is $20 per clinic to help defer some costs. The format calls for 20 minutes on the range to warm up and provide swing advice with our PGA Golf Professional and trained coaches. We then break into golf groups and head onto the course to play 5 or 6 holes, often with a friendly match to make it fun and interesting.
